Hired at Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Deputy
Filed a complaint against the Police Academy regarding the antisemitism I experienced. The governor created a Task force to investigate the Academy and its treatment of cadets from marginalized communities. Settled lawsuit against the State of Oregon.
Served on the Honor Guard from 2000-02 attended funerals of Officers killed in the line of duty.
Organized The Flight of Honor with members of PPB & Gresham Police to send 30 Officers from 6 agencies back to Washington D.C. after 911.
Supervised a Work Crew and worked in all 5 jails at the time.
2005-2007
Attended Portland State University Majoring and graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Black Studies with a focus on African American History.
Served as an Intern with Senator Avel Louise Gordly in her last term as the First Black Woman elected to the Oregon Senate
2007
Appointed by then-Senator Avel Louise Gordly and Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Shrunk to the Senate Bill 111 Multnomah County Use of Force Planning Authority requiring each Oregon county to develop a plan regarding the use of deadly physical force by law enforcement officers.
Awarded the Community Engagement Award for my work.
2005-2011
Worked at Nordstrom as a Loss Prevention Officer.
2008 Awarded Northwest Loss Prevention Allstar for my performance and saving the life of an overdose victim in the store.
2008
Hired as a Seasonal Park Ranger for the City of Portland Parks and Recreation.
2009
Successfully lobbied the Oregon State Legislature to pass a landmark bill, House Bill 3118, “The Oregon Rooney Rule,” which requires the interviewing of at least one qualified minority applicant when hiring a head coach or athletics director at any of the Oregon state-funded universities.
2011
Founding Board member of CONNECTED, a group of community members who walked in Holladay Park to create a safe space in response to the murder of Shiloh Hampton who was shot and killed in the park.
2012
Working with members of the Native American Community, NAYA it’s families, staff, students, leaders, youth and elders group and organizations lobbied the Oregon State Board of Education to successfully influence a 5-1 vote in favor of eliminating the use of Native American mascots in all Oregon K-12 schools by 2017.
2012-2016
Hired as one of the first Full-time City of Portland Park Rangers.
Lead the successful Organization and movement to Unionize the City of Portland Park Rangers with Union LIUNA 483.
Resigned from the City under a Settlement agreement after filing a WhistleBlower retaliation Lawsuit. Agreeing to never work for the city again unless I’m elected to City Council.
2013-2015
Selected as a member of The City of Portland Human Rights Commission
Served as the Chair of the Community and Police Relations Committee, Chair of The Nominating Committee and liaison to The Portland Committee on Disability.
2016
Requested the late City of Portland Commissioner Nick Fish to bring forward a policy modeled after the Oregon Rooney Rule that requires the interviewing of at least one qualified minority, one qualified woman and one qualified person with disability when hiring for Bureau Directors. It was adopted by City Council unanimously and named the Charles Jordan Standard, becoming the first such policy in government in the United States.
2018
Requested then Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith to Sponsor the Gladys McCoy Standard modeled after the Charles Jordan Standard for managers and supervisors in Multnomah County. Passed and adopted unanimously.
2018-2019
Selected as one of 13 original members of the Portland Committee on Community-Engaged Policing. Served until October of 2019. Served as Chair of The Race, Ethnicity and Others subcommittee.
2019
Awarded the Rosa Park Drum Major award from Vancouver First Avenue Baptist Church for our work through “Breaking Bread Breaking Barriers” which brings communities of color and police together for dinner and conversation to build trust and relationships.
2020
Awarded The Martin Luther King Lifetime Achievement Award by Portland's World Arts Foundation for exemplary community service in the spirit of the beliefs and principles of Dr. Martin Luther King JR.
